Mihraab Foundation does not discriminate and will not tolerate discrimination or harassment on the basis of any characteristic protected by applicable federal, Washington State, or local law. This policy applies to all programs, activities, events, services, and operations of Al-Fityān.

Program Eligibility & Commitment

Al-Fityān is a year-round program that is not only based on learning new skills but also relies on the community formed among the members to be successful. To get the most out of this program, participants and parents should plan accordingly for Al-Fityān trips and meetings, which are listed on the Al-Fityān calendar seasonally. Staff and volunteers put significant effort into organizing fun and safe events. To ensure the greatest opportunity for success, participants must make a serious commitment to the program. If that commitment is not fulfilled, a participant's continued membership with Al-Fityān may be terminated or suspended for the remainder of the year.

Program Eligibility

Al-Fityān is designed for boys ages 11-17.

Members are expected to attend all meetings and should communicate any anticipated absences to the leadership and the coordinator. Consistent engagement in skill development is also vital. Families considering the Al-Fityān program should assess their ability to meet these participation expectations alongside other commitments.

General Meeting Attendance

Al-Fityān members are expected to attend 66% of general meetings (majlis pl. majalis). This entails being able to punctually arrive at the program location (generally on the Eastside or Northside of the Greater Seattle Area) on a weeknight before 7pm.

Each meeting begins with a recitation of the Qur’an with reflection on its meaning, talks and demonstrations, skill-building activities, and congregational prayer followed by a short group dhikr. The majalis are critical to the program as they are not only focused on skills, but they also serve as opportunities to build brotherhood and spirituality.

Communication

Parents are expected to take responsibility for communicating with the rest of the group, leadership, and staff. Whether by email, text, group messaging app (we use WhatsApp) or website postings, parents are responsible for checking the WhatsApp and Youth Event Calendar frequently. It is also parents’ responsibility to organize carpooling to majalis and trips, and Mihraab/Al-Fityān does not provide transportation as an official service.

Trip Attendance

Participants must sign up in advance by the registration deadline specified on the WhatsApp group for any trip they wish to join. Participants are expected to attend a majority of trips.

Attendance Continued

If you miss more than two meetings in a month without an excuse and do not attend trips, Mihraab staff will contact you to schedule a phone call to discuss your family’s Al-Fityān registration status. Since there is a waitlist to join the program, we want to ensure that everyone in the program is actively engaged and wants to participate. This conversation will help determine whether you would like to continue in the program.

Program Structure

TRIPS

Our goal is to get each student out on one trip per month. Trips are planned and led by the Al-Fityān approved leadership. Some trips have prerequisites to safely ensure students are prepared for their outing. Hence, frequent majlis attendance is crucial. Adult staff, volunteers, and chaperones accompany youth on each trip.

SKILLS

With each learning module, Al-Fityān’s leadership will provide the instruction necessary to complete each program. However, some modules require significant work on behalf of the youth and his parents to complete. Upon completion of all requirements and approval from the instructor, the youth will receive an Ihsan Seal stamp in their Ihsan Passport. This signifies their learning progress and advancement into sacred manhood.

Al-Fityān Course Fee

The Course Fee is $150 each month. Families pay this fee up-front upon registration. Mihraab offers scholarships that help bring down the cost of the program. To apply for a scholarship or financial aid, please visit www.mihraab.com/general-financial-aid.

The course fee covers staff time, transportation costs, group gear, camping fees and permits, group meals on overnight trips, and volunteer recognition.

Some trips and activities have associated fees such as CPR/AED courses, equipment rentals, and hunt camps. These additional courses are not always mandatory but certainly create unique opportunities and wonderful experiences for students.
